Congratulations to our YMTA Scholarship Recipients!This year, PSM was able to award scholarships to six students through our 2021 YMTA Norm Manly Maritime Education Scholarship. Special thanks to our scholarship sponsors: Council of American Master Mariners (CAMM), Goodfellow Fund, Ocean Peace Inc., Foss Maritime, Pacific Fishermen Shipyard, Mike Inman, Fremont Boat Co., Elliott Bay Design Group, and Peter Philips.
We also want to thank our judges: Capt. RJ Klein (CAMM), Lexa White (Ocean Peace), Margie Freeman (Fremont Boat), Capt. Ed Ehler (Foss), and Steve Scalzo (Foss, ret.)
Meet the students!
Owen Brown is a SSS Propeller Sea Scout and will be graduating from Roosevelt High School in Seattle. He will receive our $5,000 CAMM scholarship. Owen will be attending Maine Maritime Academy this fall, where he has been accepted into the Vessel Operations and Technology program, which will prepare him for a career as a captain in the limited tonnage fleet.
Trevor Rollins, currently a student in Ocean College Research Academy (ORCA) running start marine biology program, was awarded our $4,000 scholarship, sponsored by Ocean Peace, Inc. Trevor loves working on engines, so will be attending California Maritime Academy for their Maritime Engineering Technology program. He hopes to work on large vessels.
Madeline Bonaci is a cadet in the Tacoma Sea Scouts and will be graduating from Tacoma Science and Math Institute. She was awarded our $3,500 scholarship sponsored by the Goodfellow Fund. Madeline is attending California Maritime Academy this fall and plans to grow her leadership skills so she can pursue a career as a Coast Guard officer.
Sophie Jenness, also a student in the ORCA program, will be graduating from Edmonds Heights. She has been awarded our $3,000 Foss Maritime scholarship. Sophie will be attending the University of Washington for their Marine Biology program and plans to focus on chemical oceanography so that she can work for NOAA or the Washington State Department of Ecology.
Jonathan Niva is graduating from Sehome High School in Bellingham. He is the recipient of our $2,500 scholarship sponsored by Fremont Boat, Mike Inman, Peter Philips and Elliott Bay Design Group. Jonathan will be taking marine technology classes over the summer at Skagit Valley College before heading to California Maritime Academy in the fall. His hope is to become a tug captain or work on a military rescue vessel.
Ethan Pewitt is graduating from Everett High School. He was awarded the $2,000 Pacific Fishermen Shipyard and Goodfellow Fund scholarship. He will be attending Mayville State University to play baseball and attain a business degree. After college, he plans to return to Puget Sound and open a mobile marine repair business that will help boaters on the water.
