YMTA Programs and Scholarship Accomplishments for 2013: Pacific Maritime Magazine Scholarship winners highlighted in yellow
YMTA was founded in 1996 to encourage youth to pursue maritime careers to help with succession issues of the towboat companies. Our 3 major programs were envisioned in 1996 and have now grown to the 2013 level. In 2013 YMTA was partnered with 9 schools and 6 community groups throughout Puget Sound region to support their programs which give students marine experiences. Through these partnerships we interacted with about 200-300 students in 2013. In 2004 YMTA established its Maritime Educational Scholarship program. In our 10 years we have awarded 57 scholarships to 51 students interested in pursuing a marine related career including 6 students in 2013 and 7 scholarships for $13,000. We participated in high school career fairs throughout the Puget Sound region. We attended about 15-20 high school career fairs in 2013 and co-chaired the planning committee for the Seattle Maritime Career Day and staffed a booth. We also staffed a maritime career booth at 2 community fairs in 2013. An estimate of the number of students we connect with through participation in the career fairs is somewhere around 1,000, some for only a minute or two others for 10 to 15 minutes. In addition, Gary personally mentored about 7 maritime students of which all are pursuing a maritime career. In addition to working with youth programs, YMTA continues to build a network of maritime programs, teachers, post-high school training programs, and industry representatives. We had served on many committees and Boards seeking to develop maritime training opportunities. Almost all towboat companies operating in Puget Sound have at least one BMA or YMTA mentored student or YMTA scholarship winner working in their fleet.
