Ordinary Seaman (commonly referred to as an OS) is the entry level USCG Merchant Mariner Rating.
An OS participates in work on deck, assists the Chief Engineer in the vessel engine room, assists the vessel cook, or may be the vessel cook.
Many who hold the OS rating quickly advance to the MMC rating of Able Seaman (AB) in advancing their career.
