Qualified Member of the Engine Department (QMED)

QMED is responsible for working in the engine department of a vessel. These positions can exist on any type of vessel.

There are different ratings of QMEDs, the highest being QMED- Any Rating; other QMED ratings are:

QMED – Electrician/Refrigerating Engineer
QMED-Oiler
QMED-Fireman/Watertender
QMED-Pumpman/Machinist
QMED- Junior Engineer|

While holding a Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC), an QMED is considered an unlicensed, experienced assistant engineer type position.

As an QMED earns “Seatime” in combination with the required training, a QMED can upgrade their MMC to a different or higher rating of QMED, or a Designated Duty Engineer License.

An QMED may perform many duties such as:
