A Mate is responsible for working in thewheelhouse of a vessel. These positions can exist on any type of vessel.
While holding a Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC), an Mate is considered a licensed, experienced officer.
There are different levels and tonnages of Mates’ licenses, including 3rd Mate, 2nd Mate, Chief Mate as well as the varying tonnage restrictions. For a detailed overview and checklists including the Mate requirements please visit the licensing career path.
As Mate earns “Seatime” in combination with the required training, a Mate can upgrade his MMC to a higher tonnage or Mate endorsement, or upgrade to his Master/Captain license.
A Mate may perform many duties such as:
