Chief Engineer

Chief Engineer is responsible for managing the engine department of a vessel and any assistant engineers. These positions exist on any type of vessel.

There are different license ratings of engineers, please be aware the license requirements can vary per vessel and company, For example there are:

Designated Duty Engineers (500 Horsepower to Unlimited)
Assisted Engineer Limited (1600 Gross Tons) Unlimited Horsepower
Chief Engineer Limited (1600 Gross Tons) Unlimited Horsepower
3rd Assistant Engineer Unlimited HP
2nd Assistant Engineer Unlimited HP
1st Assistant Engineer Unlimited HP
Chief Engineer Unlimited HP

While holding a Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC), an engineer endorsement is considered a licensed, experienced  engineer type position.

As an engineer earns “Seatime” in combination with the required training, an engineer can upgrade their MMC to a different or higher rating of engineering license.

An engineer may perform many duties such as:
