May 12, 2010 YMTA meeting minutesMay 18, 2010 Greeting YMTA supporters, The Youth Maritime Training Association’s regular monthly meeting was held at Foss Maritime Company, 660 W Ewing St, Seattle, WA. Board of Directors in attendance included Gary Stauffer, CC Conklin, Ken Passé, Justin Borland, Justin Poulsen, Charlie See and Carleen See. In attendance were Advisors Diana Parker (retired Port of Seattle and parent of maritime student, Jeb Parr (Puget Sound Naval Shipyard), and Carl Ellis (Seattle Maritime Academy); and Guest Rob Holland (Port of Seattle Commissioner). With 7 Board members, a quorum was present. Our last meeting of the summer is scheduled for June 9, 2010 at Foss Maritime Company starting at 1700 (5:00 pm) and ending at 1815 (6:15 pm).
Message from the President - Both the 2010 Maritime Career Day on Thursday May 6 and the new Youth and Family Maritime Education Fair on Saturday May 8 were very successful and both were held at the Maritime Event Center as a Maritime Festival Week event. About 500 students and 200 adults attended the Career Day. Exhibitors who numbered about 24 promoted maritime career opportunities that included local and national maritime training programs. The new Maritime Education Fair on Saturday attracted over 3,000 visitors, it really helped that the Maritime Event Center had one of few open restroom facilities available to the public. Our YMTA maritime career pathway exhibit was busy both days. I was able to speak to many youth and adults about possible career pathways. Maritime Career Day marked the end of career fairs that I will attend until next fall. - Captain Richard Klein from the Council of American Master Mariners has scheduled their Third Annual Bob Magee Memorial Golf Tournament for Thursday September 2nd at Mt. Si Golf Course in Snoqualmie, which benefits YMTA. Justin Poulsen will organize our YMTA volunteers to help with the event. We need to help find sponsors for the event including donated auction items and to encourage our friends to organize foursomes to play in the tournament. - Our CPA, Greenwood, Ohlund & Co. completed our 2009 990EZ IRS tax forms today. Once I sign them, we will mail them to IRS to make our May 15th deadline for submission. Gary Stauffer YMTA Treasure’s Report – Since
our April meeting we have written six checks totaling $1,918 including $105 to
Compass Courses for the last of Hank Todd’s 2009 scholarship, $500 to Puget

It will probably be in the NW Weekend section. NOAA Science Camp will begin July 12th and another session will begin July 19th - If you know a child entering 7th or 8th grades in the fall there are still openings available. http://www.wsg.washington.edu/education/events/noaa.html As many people may know, a lot of NOAA staff in Seattle are working on the oil spill response, from Seattle. Our scientists from NOAA’s Emergency Response Division are the experts who are modeling where the oil slick is likely to go. Rebecca Reuter Puget Sound Voyaging Society – On behalf of all the youth that are taking part in the Community Boat Project, we thank you for your generous donation of $500 for our vessel. We expect our new boat, Onward, will be as successful as last year’s Journeyman, which now is engaged in at least four on-going school and community programs. It is organizations like yours that make this grassroots effort happen. I invite you to come by and watch the progress at the Boat School. “Boatbuilding” class meets Thursdays 1-5 through the school year. Every Saturday is Community Boatbuilding Day. Join us 10-3 to row or build. Friday look for the “Voyaging” class on-the-water in Lower Hadlock Bay. Wayne Chimenti, Project Manager California Maritime Academy - Graduation - The commencement exercise was held on Saturday, May 1st at the campus in Vallejo. 163 students, including Mike Hess from Ballard plus 12 others from the state of Washington were among the graduates. More than 1,000 guests attended the ceremonies. Training Cruises – The Training Ship Golden Bear departed from the campus on the following day, Sunday, May 2nd, for a day of maneuvering, anchoring and berthing exercises within San Francisco Bay. She tied up in San Francisco for the evening, where a reception was held onboard for nearly 200 grads, parents and friends of the Academy. The ship sailed the following morning and, as we meet this evening, is underway to Pusan, Korea. The first Cruise will end on June 28th, in Honolulu, the cadets will rotate off/on, and the second Cruise will retrace basically the same ports in reverse order. The Golden Bear will call in Seattle from Sunday, August 22nd through Wednesday, August 25th, with berthing at Pier 66. The Admission Department will host open houses for prospective students and parents, as well as high school counselors on Tuesday. A Captain’s Reception will be held on Tuesday evening from 5-7 PM. Contact Ken Passé if you are interested in participating in any of the events. New Students – 22 students from the state of Washington have been “admitted” into the class entering Cal Maritime in September.
Puget Sound Naval Shipyard – The PSNS is working with a number of high and middle schools in the greater Kitsap County area to promote programs for designing and building underwater Remotely Operated Vehicles. We are submitting a grant proposal for funding to expand the number of schools in their ROV program. We also had a major presence at Maritime Career Day with groups from our Dive Shop, Industrial Trade Skills/Apprenticeship Program, Engineering Departments, and the Naval Undersea Warfare Center at Keyport, WA. The divers provided an underwater robotics demo that attracted many interested students. All of our groups were very excited about the Career Day and enjoyed the interaction with the students. Corinne Beach Northwest Seaport - Northwest Seaport has been involved in several preservation/restoration projects, including making progress on the Lightship Rehabilitation work and stopping water infiltration in the decks and house structures of the Historic Tug Arthur Foss. We had an open house on May 1 and 2 as part of the Partners in Preservation grant competition. While we did not tap into the email voting process as well as we had hoped, we think it is great that the Schooner Adventuress is leading the vote as we approach the final hour -- best of luck Adventuress! We thank our supporters for their votes, and asked them to now vote for the Adventuress through today (Wednesday), the last day to vote. Otherwise, we are preparing for the summer season of continued restoration work, keeping ships open to the public, developing programming, and making it all work through developing a good donor base. A priority for us in the next few months is to coordinate closely with John Hastings of The Anchor Program to plan out how to really make this partnership work. John has gone through 2 class cycles with good support from the Historic Ships at Lake Union Park -- but we have much to do in order to really make this a viable program. The partnership between The Anchor Program and the historic ships (Northwest Seaport, Fireboat Duwamish, and Steam Ferry Virginia V) is very beneficial to the ships for a couple of reasons -- TAP participants can help preserve the boats while they learn important maritime skills, and their time doing this can be used as vital in-kind matching labor for various grant applications. This can really work! We are looking forward to a busy summer, great partnerships, and the grand opening of Lake Union Park on September 25. Shannon Fitzgerald Pacific Maritime Institute – Gregg reports that he is in contact now with two west coast maritime schools about taking ownership of PMIs Kongsberg Norcontrol Ownership Radar simulator system, but neither one has decided yet whether to accept the system. If we are unsuccessful, PMI has agreed to take the system back if we provide the labor to move the system. Any volunteers! Gregg Trunnell, Director Pacific Maritime Institute Virginia V Foundation – I am the new president of the Steamship Virginia V Foundation replacing Tobey Wilkins. We are interested in expanding our youth programs and are interested to talking with YMTA leadership about your ideas to reach out to youth to get them involved in the Virginia V activities. Capt Steve Holmes, President Seattle Maritime Academy – Our funding for a new teaching building for the SMA was delayed by the legislature until 2011-12 biennium but the funding level was not reduced. The SMA is planning to increase their marine engineering programs to meet the demands imposed by the new STCW requirements for marine engineers currently being drafted by the US Coast Guard. With the recent arrival of a surplus military marine engineering training barge from Tacoma, we will greatly expand the capability of our engineering and diesel technology curriculum independent of the new building. The barge is in excellent condition and came fully equipped with machinery and auxiliary power plants and with room to house SMA existing machinery currently on the Bartlett. The barge also has a complete galley, 18 berths, and 17 office spaces. We are currently installing a 200-amp service to the barge but it has its own gen sets capable of providing all its own electrical power and fresh water. About half the bottom plates were replace five years ago. Plans include painting the interior and exterior this summer and hauling out the barge in about a year to paint the bottom.
