YMTA Scholarship Committee – Since our November meeting, the YMTA Scholarship Announcement press release was distributed to YMTA emailing lists. Western Maritime published the announcement in their December edition. It is posted on the websites for YMTA, BMA, and Northwest Seaport. Letters were sent to all 2009 YMTA donors, which included our Scholarship Announcement. The Marine Exchange of Puget Sound sent it to their email distribution list. Scholarship Committee: Terry Rustan, Charlie See, Justin Poulsen, Gary Stauffer, Norm Manly, CC Conklin and Scholarship Chair - Carleen See
Carleen M. See Educational Partner Committee – Norm kicked off his Mock Interview program at Manson High School in Chelan Valley on January 6. He will be working with the students until January 25 when he departs for Tucson for three months. The actual interviews will not take place until April 16. Norm has uploaded several documents related to the Mock Interview program on the YMTA website http://ymta.net/MockInterview/MockInterviews.asp A big part of the Mock Interview program is where Norm is interviewed by Manson's Principal Don Vanderholm. The interview took place in the Manson High School library with all 45 seniors in attendance. What they learned at this interview was what not to do!!!!! Thanks to Heidi Neal you can see for yourself, view pictures and a video. Norm Manly YMTA Community Partner Program Involvement Committee – I had planned to developed formal partnership letter exchange with the Northwest Maritime Center, Jefferson Community School, The Anchor Program and Friends of Maritime. Unfortunately I was unsuccessful in setting aside time to get that accomplished. This needs to get done as soon as possible. Gary Stauffer Maritime Career Path Committee – On hold until we get the word from Maritime Transportation Cluster Initiative Skills Panel of the Workforce Development Council of Seattle -King County. Ken Passé Grant Writing Committee – No report Marketing Plan Committee – No report. YMTA Website Committee - No report. Community Partners Friends of Maritime – The Maritime Event Center (MEC) opened its doors in May 2009. It is operated by Columbia Hospitality Incorporated in conjunction with the Bell Harbor International Conference Center and is being marketed as the “clubhouse” for Puget Sound-based commercial maritime and fishing organizations including supporting educational, government and nonprofit groups. In addition to its use as a maritime event center, the MEC has formed a partnership with an IRS certified, tax-exempt nonprofit board of local maritime leaders called the Friends of Maritime (FOM). The new FOM board members are: Chuck Fowler, Puget Sound Maritime Historical Society and President; Paul Stevens, Foss Maritime, MRG Inc and Past President; Gary Stauffer, Youth Maritime Training Association and secretary-treasurer; Jan Jacobs, American Seafoods Company; Peter Philips, Philips Publishing; and Kevin Clark, Argosy Cruises. The Friends of Maritime (FOM) has established a Maritime Education Initiative, which sponsors King, Snohomish and Pierce County students to visit the MEC and learn about our region’s marine trade, maritime transportation and commercial fishing industries through a program called “MEC Mondays. In the fourth quarter of this year, fourteen schools and over 600 students will have participated in MEC Mondays all supported by local companies and organizations through fundraising by the FOM. The MEC is planning an Industry Briefing on January 27 to provide an opportunity for guests to tour the MEC, learn about MEC Mondays and learn how they can benefit from becoming affiliated with the program. Guests will also receive an update on the activities planned for the facility and be introduced to the MEC as an event space. Also, Friends of Maritime and the Propeller Club have scheduled the 2010 Maritime Career Day for Tuesday May 6 to be held at the MEC. Gary Stauffer will co-chair the planning committee again this year. Chuck Fowler The Center for Wooden Boats – The Center for Wooden Boat's 2010 Auction and Dinner Celebration, "Blue Hawaii," will be held February 13th, 2010 at the Swedish Cultural Center. The evening's events will include live and silent auctions, Elvis impersonators, beverages, and a 5-course dinner by As You Like It Catering. Doors open and silent auction bidding begins at 5 p.m. Now in its 34th year, CWB's Annual Auction & Dinner Celebration is our largest fundraiser. Proceeds from the event will benefit CWB's award-winning hands-on educational programs for kids of all ages. CWB is able to engage over 5,000 youth in on the water activities each year, and through the donations of generous supporters is able to provide most youth classes on a pay-what-you-can basis. Erin Schiedler Northwest Seaport - Northwest Seaport completed a very challenging and rewarding year in 2009. We are now preparing and planning our 2010 activities, which will include (1) at least one, possibly two grants for the historic Tugboat Arthur Foss to complete needed stabilization work and support long-term restoration planning, (2) the final agreements and contracts in place to start work on the Lightship rehabilitation (very soon!), and (3) dispersal of artifacts saved during the Wawona deconstruction. Of most interest to the YMTA are two upcoming items. We are coordinating and facilitating with John Hastings of The Anchor Program in support of his starting another 3-month session in early January. The Seaport was able to expand our office space into the area vacated by the Schooner Society at the Naval Armory, and that is now John’s area. We are also working with John Foster of Ballard Maritime Academy to put on the very popular Engineer for a Day course in February. In addition to these, during Fish Expo we made contact with the folks developing the new maritime vocational training center in Anacortes and may be able to develop 1-day engineer training field trips for them, similar to the Engineer for a Day. Shannon Fitzgerald Learning For Life – Gary has been told that Learning for Life program has lost its funding and no longer is functioning in the Seattle area. Northwest Maritime Center and Wooden Boat Foundation – Gary Syverson reported that NWMC will resume the 7th grade on the water experience program next month. The Voyager program of PIE and ICE students are building their second boat, a 30-foot version of the boat built last year. I will meet with Marci Van Cleve about the Scholarship program tomorrow. Have we discussed with our corporate sponsors their criteria for hiring? Although we have the Career Day program to attract student interest to the maritime industry, only students who go on for further education such as PMI or one of the academies have any immediate direction. While the industry claims to need 30,000 new employees in the future- what is offered for the majority of the hands-on non-management jobs that need to be filled? What do we do with the 18-22 year olds that may have an interest? Can we give them some goal-oriented suggestions, such as to when they might expect job opportunities and what employers expect? Andrew Gale, Programs Manager California Maritime Academy - New student applications for enrollment continue strong again this year. As noted previously, the Priority Enrollment period for Cal Maritime (and all California State University campuses) ran from 1 October through 30 November. As happened last year, the Marine Transportation (Deck Officer) program was closed to new applicants on 1 December, immediately following the end of the Priority Enrollment period. There were simply more applicants than the university can handle! The remaining five programs remain open, but it is expected that the engineering programs may begin closing soon, too. The Academy has announced the Training Ship Golden Bear cruise itineraries for this coming summer. The training ship will make two back-to-back Far East trips, calling at Busan, Kobe, Guam, Saipan, Wake Island and Honolulu, where the cadets will change out. Then, the second cruise will basically retrace the same port calls, to Wake Island, Saipan, Busan and Kobe, but making a Seattle call from August 22nd to 25th prior to the return to the campus at Vallejo. For Seattle, there will be ship tours and a reception on board on the evening of Tuesday, 24 August. More details later.
Spectrum Subsea International – Todd said that Spectrum Subsea is planning to expand their education program in the near future through a non-profit organization. He will give more details when their plans are firm. Todd
Christensen Seattle Public Schools Career and Technical Education Program – Ken Passé and Cassandra Sandkam attended an Advisory Committee for Seattle Public School’s career fair. Given the budget projections for the year, it is unlikely that SPS will have a district wide career fair. Also, all departments will be cut by 20% and there will likely only be one career specialist left in SPS. Gary Stauffer Puget Sound
Naval Shipyard – No report Jeb Parr Grays Harbor Historical Seaport Authority (GHHSA) – No report. Les Bolton, Executive Director Port of Seattle - No report. Puget Sound Maritime Historical Society – No report Pacific Maritime Institute – No report. Seattle Maritime Academy – No report. Virginia V Foundation – No report. Sound Experience - No report. Northwest Marine Trades Association – No report. Educational Partners Anchor Program – John, Executive Director of the Anchor Program thanked YMTA for helping him to get acquainted with the Seattle maritime community over the past year. He has scheduled his second Seattle class to start on January 19th in cooperation with Northwest Seaport. He expects at least 11 students to attend. He will focus the training on seamanship and engineering skills with more emphasis on engineering than in the past. He will be applying to the USCG to get CG certification for his training classes so his students are better qualified for maritime apprenticeship programs. John needs the help of our maritime community to enrich the training. In addition to financial support, he is looking for instructors and guest speakers to discuss any relevant maritime topic and at-sea or land-based career. He needs equipment and tools like needle guns, paint, PPE, etc. He also wants to expand the number of field trip opportunities to local shipyards, vessels, port operations, simulators, etc that will provide the students with a real world maritime exposure. If you or your company can help out with John’s program, please give him a call. John could expand his program considerably if he had access to student housing either onshore or preferably aboard a vessel where students, under supervision, could live, stand watch and use the vessel as a classroom. If you know of temporary housing or possible vessel with moorage in the Lake Union/ship canal area that could be made available to the Anchor Program, please contact John. John L. Hastings Anacortes High School – I am ready for another marine tech class to start next semester. This year we went to a seven period day and the classes are so short it’s difficult for our curriculum. The new Maritime Academy building that is under construction is on schedule and coming along nicely. I have been working with Skagit Valley College on curriculum and what the new program will look like. We need to start talking with councilors to get students registered for next fall, opening fall 2010. The website has been started, but no construction photos are posted. http://nwtech.k12.wa.us/
Ballard Maritime Academy - John reports that the BMA is recruiting for new students for the coming school year. Plans are also underway for Engineer-for-the-day class at Northwest Seaport. Also Gary Stauffer from YMTA has started the job shadow project for the junior class. He will also be working with Megan Vogel to set up summer maritime internships for the juniors. The Marine Science class is preparing for the ORCA Bowl competition scheduled for February 6 at the UW.
Hoquiam High School – The Hoquiam Program is still at a low ebb. My current schedule still prevents me from conducting class weekly however there is some interest in reviving a Longboat club and I am considering the possibility of offering a class through the local community college. I will also be attending a Longboat crew leader training that will be conducted in Olympia at the end of this month.
Puget Sound Skills Center – Our student-managed Coho salmon hatchery is teaming with fish as I write this. We have over 5000 yearlings in our wet lab tanks and another 10,000 alevins that just hatched a few weeks ago. The students have been caring for these salmon throughout the school year. In about a month they will transfer the 10,000 from their egg trays to a larger tank and begin feeding them solid food. In March the students will be clipping the adipose fins on the larger fry in preparation for their release in May. In December, our underwater cameras succumbed to the ravages of life under the sea. Unlike the last set of cameras that lasted two years, these survived only a few months. I’ll be working with volunteer divers & technicians from the UW’s Applied Physics Lab to replace these units. In a couple weeks, a United States Coast Guard marine science tech will be visiting the class to talk about her career and USCG opportunities. Over the years a number of program graduates have gone on to successful careers in the US Coast Guard.
