YMTA receives GrantThe Youth Maritime Training Association (YMTA) today announced that it has been awarded a $20,000 grant from the Washington State Workforce Training and Education Coordinating Board. Working with faculty members from Ballard High School, YMTA will use this funding to develop a high school level maritime training curriculum. YMTA Vice President Norm Manly stated that grant monies will be used to develop training curricula for a program to be known as the Ballard Maritime Institute. In addition to Ballard High staff, YMTA will collaborate with the Seattle Public Schools Department of School to Work, the Alliance for Education, Odyssey the Marine Discovery Center, the King County Labor Council, and prominent local maritime employers such as Foss Maritime. YMTA is also looking for additional members of the maritime and/or educational communities to serve on a curriculum development advisory committee. YMTA is non-profit membership organization chartered under the laws of the State of Washington. YMTA was formed by representatives of maritime employers and labor organizations to expand youth awareness of the opportunities available in the maritime field, and facilitate training and education opportunities. The curriculum will be developed by the end of November, and the first classes will be taught next Spring.
