WASL, Career & Technical Education InformationThe Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI)provides all schools in Washington tests to measure student achievement of basic academic requirements (such as math computation) and more advanced skills (such as comparing and contrasting reading passages). OSPI develops or selects and administers all state assessments and reports achievement data for individual students, schools, districts and the overall state. This information helps districts and schools refine instructional practices and focus curriculum. It also gives parents information about how well their child is doing and where additional help may be needed.
Tests administered statewide include the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL), the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS), and the Iowa Tests of Educational Development (ITED). Most school districts also select and administer exams beyond those provided by the state. YMTA is exploring if maritime might be included in the WASL. Helping the YMTA through this process will be Moe Broom, Program Supervisor, Technology and Industry from OSPI and Shep Siegel, Manager School to Work, Seattle Public Schools. If you would like to become involved contact Norm Manly.
