SECRETARIES
SLATER, RILEY ANNOUNCE
TRANSPORTATION CURRICULUM PILOT SCHOOL SITES
U.S. Secretary of Transportation Rodney E. Slater and U.S. Secretary of
Education Richard W. Riley today announced that nine pilot sites have been
selected as pilot sites and will receive funding under the Transportation,
Distribution and Logistics Building Linkages Career Cluster curriculum project.
Secretary Slater has long supported education as a
means to ensure that America’s transportation workforce is skilled and
knowledgeable.
“Through the Building Linkages Career Cluster pilot school
sites, the education and transportation communities together will create
curriculum materials to help ensure that America’s transportation workforce
will be ready for the challenges of the new century and the new millennium,”
Secretary Slater said. “President
Clinton and Vice President Gore view education as more important than ever, and
the nation’s need for technologically literate transportation workers
continues to grow.”
The Career Cluster project is an initiative designed to help students develop
and realize their career goals by assisting schools to successfully transition
students for pathways to college and/or employment by partnering education with
employers and industry groups.
"The Career Clusters project will provide the guidance needed to develop a
new approach to vocational education," Secretary Riley said.
"The idea of helping students develop their strengths by linking the
knowledge they have acquired at school with the opportunity to use those skills
in the workplace is essential to ensuring their future success."
The schools selected as pilot sites are:
·
YMTA’s
Maritime Program at Ballard High School, Seattle

The Transportation, Distribution and Logistics Building
Linkages Career Cluster curriculum project is administered by the Illinois State
Board of Education under a contract funded by the U.S. Department of Education
and the National School-to-Work Office. The
goal of the project is to create curriculum materials based on state academic
standards and industry-recognized skill standards that will fully prepare
students for employment and or postsecondary education in this career area.
With this funding, each school site will develop and test the curriculum
materials through a consortium of education, labor, industry and professional
organizations.
Transportation, Distribution
and Logistics is one of 16 career clusters established by the U.S. Department of
education's Office of Vocational and Adult Education.
The other career clusters are: manufacturing; information technology
services; arts and communications services; agriculture and natural resources;
construction; wholesale/retail sales and services; financial services;
hospitality and tourism; business and administrative services; human services;
legal and protective services; scientific research, engineering and technical
services; education and training services; and public administration/government
services.
